Ha Noi-based Sofitel Metropole Hotel has made the Conde Nast Traveller Hot List 2010, the publication’s annual list of the "66 Coolest New Hotels in the World".

The 100-year-old hotel has received numerous other accolades in the past. It was chosen as one of the 500 best hotels in the world by readers of Travel & Leisure and Conde Nast Travel; selected as the best hotel in Ha Noi by Hong Kong’s Destin Asian, Asia Money magazine and Viet Nam’s VnEconomy.

It was also named 2007’s best hotel for businessmen in a capital city, by readers of the Business Traveller Asia Pacific.
Russian travel firms survey province

Representatives of 14 Russian travel companies wrapped up a survey tour of tourism facilities in Binh Thuan Province’s Phan Thiet City last Sunday. According to the Binh Thuan Tourism Association, the organiser of the trip, Russian tourists, account for 30 per cent of international visitors to Binh Thuan, and often have long stays at seaside resorts in Phan Thiet.

The province received 220,000 tourists in April, bringing the total number of tourists to the province in the first four months of 2010 to 832,000, a year-on-year increase of 13.4 per cent. Nearly 130,000 of them were foreign visitors.

Four-day summer golf tours to Brunei

Saigontourist has introduced a new summer tour called Playing Golf in Brunei Darussalam for three to four days - priced from US$628. Visitors will stay at the Royal Brunei Golf and Country Club surrounded by tropical forest about 15 minutes from Brunei Airport. The company has recently also organised golf tours to Thailand, China and the US and similar tours to cities in Viet Nam which have golf courses such as Da Lat, Phan Thiet and Da Nang.

Saigontourist also has a four-day tour called Brunei - Kota Kinabalu for $649, which departs from HCM City on June 13 and 14.

Accor to manage two more top hotels

Accor Asia Pacific Corporation has signed an agreement with Que Huong Liberty JSC to develop and manage two luxury hotels in HCM City’s District 1. The four-star 252-room Novotel Sai Gon Centre is under construction at 165-167 Hai Ba Trung Street while construction of the five-star Pullman Hotel will start in September at 148 Tran Hung Dao Street in District 1, where the Metropole Hotel is currently located.

HCM City to conduct tourism surveys

HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will conduct a survey of the city’s top tourism markets including the US, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. Australia and South Korea. The department’s Travel Division said the surveys would provide insight into what travellers to the city expect. To obtain the information, the division will distribute questionnaires to tourists and collect data concerning market trends and visitors’ demands from various other sources.

The department has also been collaborating with the HCM City University of Economics to carry out a large-scale survey on the Backpackers’ Quarter which is surrounded by De Tham, Bui Vien, Pham Ngu Lao and Do Quang Dau streets.

Documentary to show in China

Vietravel Marketing and Tourist Company, or Vietravel, in collaboration with Travel Channel China, a leading channel for travel information throughout China, which broadcasts 24 hours in 31 provinces and attracts over 300 million viewers, has just completed filming a documentary about Viet Nam.

Between May 16-21 the film crew travelled from south to north to film some of Vietnam’s prime locations. In HCM City, they visited the Central Post Office, the Opera House, Ben Thanh Market, Cho Lon Town and Goddess Thien Hau Pagoda.

In Nha Trang, they visited Hon Mun, Hon Tam, Tri Nguyen Aquarium, Thap Ba Ponagar and Long Son Pagoda. In Ha Noi, they filmed scenic spots such as Ba Dinh Square, One Pillar Pagoda, Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple.
