Turning sand, salt and garbage into tourist products
The group first realszed that Vietnam has many advantages to develop tourist products as it possesses the long coastline with a number of beautiful beaches. Yet, tourist products in Vietnam remain limited and monotonous. They began to think of how to develop original and more attractive products for tourism.

Ms. Hanh said, “In reality, we can create many unique products to attract visitors, such as sand Zen gardens and sand mazes where tourists can practice yoga or discover mysterious mazes. In addition, with Vietnamese skillful hands, various eye-catching handicrafts could be made of sand, such as jewelry, pictures and souvenirs.

For long, salt was known as a seasoning in our everyday meals but we can make unique tourist products of it. For instance, with creativity we can build imaginative caves, luxurious hotels, high-class villas or even a village from salt. Likewise, from the well-known effect of salt in the treatment of several diseases, we can combine between marine tours and physical therapy.

Especially, rubbish has already been a pressing problem on Vietnamese beaches as it seriously pollutes the environment on one hand and affects maritime tourism on the other. However, if it is carefully processed, rubbish can become various handicrafts, toys and fine art products.

Another idea given by the group is to erect recycled parks and cafes from the collected rubbish in beaches. Types of rubbish to be used to build the recycled park include solid materials like timber, plastic, glass and metal. According to the researchers, rubbish would be carefully treated before being turned into useful things. Products that can be made from rubbish are various and can be tailored to specific tastes of tourists.

To renovate Vietnamese tourism

The research group first would like to change the Vietnamese way of thinking about tourism. Vietnam’s tourism sector has not exploited much the country’s potential but it has caused considerable damage to original natural resources. Against the backdrop, Vietnamese scientists and tourism businesses should join hands to make things better, which could benefit tourism sector and the country as a whole.

According to the researchers, to attract more tourists, tourism companies do not need to open new tours. If economic and scientific experts can combine their ideas, they can make more creative tourist products, which then bring more profits to the sector.

“One can realise that, for example, Pattaya beach in Thailand is not so beautiful as some Vietnamese examples, but it still lures a large number of international tourists as Thai tourism companies have known how to exploit local natural resources for tourism activities. In Vietnam, tourism businesses lack a general business vision; as a result, they can only see the floating top of a huge iceberg and exploit only 10-20 per cent of local natural resources,” Ms. Hanh said.

In fact, it is not difficult to realise the idea to make tourist products out of salt or sand, she said. Although to build a recycled park is a large project that needs more time and efforts, it must be a feasible and appreciated one, she affirmed.
